How to pick
Start from the constraint that rules types out. If the valve must mount vertically-down or resist water hammer, you need a spring, inline, or wafer type. If the line is large and flanged, wafer wins on size and weight. If you want to service the valve without pulling it from the pipe, Y-pattern.
