Wafer check valves use two spring-loaded half-discs that fold together against reverse flow inside a thin body that bolts directly between two pipe flanges. The double-door design is far shorter and lighter than a flanged swing check at the same size, which is why it is specified on large-diameter water, HVAC, and fire-protection lines where weight and lay length matter. Apex Flow Solutions stocks ductile iron double-door wafer checks from 2 in. to 16 in.

Where wafer checks are used
Fire protection is the biggest application, and we carry UL/FM listed models for sprinkler and standpipe risers. Beyond fire, wafer checks are common on HVAC chilled and condenser water, pump discharge headers, and municipal water where a compact, low-cost check between flanges beats a bulky swing body. For threaded brass or smaller lines, use a swing check instead.
Sizing and installation
Wafer bodies center between ANSI flanges and are held by the through-bolts of the flange joint, so they have no flanged ends of their own. Match the valve size to your line size and confirm flange class. The spring-loaded doors close quickly, which helps control slam on pump lines. These are heavy items and ship LTL freight.
Common questions
Wafer check or swing check?
Wafer wins on large lines where compactness and weight matter and where UL/FM fire listing is required. A swing check gives the lowest pressure drop and is simpler to service on smaller threaded lines.
Do wafer check valves need a gasket?
Yes, install with standard flange gaskets on both faces, the same as any flanged joint. Confirm the valve's face-to-face dimension fits your flange spacing.
