Swing vs Spring Check Valve: Which to Use
Swing and spring are the two most common check valve types, and they behave differently in ways that matter. The short version: use a swing check for low-pressure-drop flow on larger horizontal water lines, and a spring check where you need quiet closing, any-orientation mounting, or protection against water hammer.
How each one works
A swing check uses a hinged disc that swings open with forward flow and drops closed by gravity when flow stops. Because gravity does the closing, orientation matters and closing can be abrupt.
A spring check uses a spring to push a poppet or disc against the seat. Forward pressure opens it; the spring closes it quickly and smoothly the instant flow stops, before reverse flow can build.

Cracking pressure
A swing check opens at almost no pressure, which is good when you cannot spare any head. A spring check needs a defined cracking pressure to open, which is often exactly what you want: it keeps the valve firmly shut until the system is genuinely running, and it closes before reverse flow starts.
Orientation
This is the deciding factor in many jobs. A swing check relies on gravity, so it only works horizontally or with vertical-upward flow. A spring check works in any orientation, including vertical-down.
Water hammer
When flow reverses suddenly, for example when a pump trips, a swing check disc can slam shut and send a pressure spike through the system. A spring check closes fast enough to seat before reverse flow builds. More in Water Hammer: Causes and Fixes.
