Camlock Materials: Aluminum vs Polypropylene vs Stainless
The type letter tells a camlock fitting what to connect to. The body material tells it what it can survive touching. That second question matters more than most buyers expect going in — the same Type C coupler exists in aluminum, polypropylene, and stainless, and picking the wrong one isn't a minor tradeoff. It's the difference between a fitting that lasts years and one that pits, cracks, or seizes on a schedule.
This guide covers where each of the three materials actually wins, the one chemical pairing worth stopping and rethinking before you order, and an honest note on brass, which we don't currently stock but can source.
Aluminum
Aluminum is the lightest and least expensive of the two metal options, and it's the standard choice for general mechanical-duty transfer — tanker offloading, frac water, aggregate slurry, anything where the fitting gets connected and disconnected repeatedly and weight matters to whoever's lifting the hose. It handles routine wear well and costs meaningfully less than stainless at every size we stock.
Where aluminum doesn't belong: oxidizing chemicals. Sodium hypochlorite and similar oxidizers attack aluminum — not slowly, either. On tote-transfer or feed-line duty, an aluminum fitting in hypochlorite service typically pits and seizes within months, and a failed coupling on a chemical line is a bad day for whoever's standing there when it lets go. If hypochlorite or another oxidizer is anywhere in the line, skip to the polypropylene section below.

Polypropylene
Polypropylene is lighter than aluminum and resists a broad range of chemicals that eat metal, including chlorine and hypochlorite — it's the standard answer for the exact service aluminum can't handle. It costs less than stainless and is common on chemical transfer, water treatment dosing lines, and agricultural chemical service. The tradeoff runs the other direction from aluminum: poly has lower mechanical and pressure duty than either metal, and it's more vulnerable to UV degradation and physical damage (a dropped wrench cracks poly a lot easier than it dents aluminum) over years of outdoor service.
One thing worth knowing before you order: the body material and the gasket material are two separate decisions, and both have to be right for oxidizer service. A polypropylene body with a standard Buna-N gasket has the same weak point as an aluminum body — the gasket fails the same way. Stainless Steel
Stainless is the most durable option mechanically and the broadest chemical-resistance option across the three — the choice for food and beverage transfer, potable-adjacent service, and any application where corrosion resistance and long service life matter more than upfront cost. It's also the heaviest and most expensive of the three, and our current stainless line has the narrowest size range of the group: full type-letter coverage at 1 in., a Type A adapter only at 1-1/2 in., and 2 in. covers seven of the eight types (no Type A yet). No 3 in. stainless is currently listed.
One honest gap: our stainless camlock listings are tagged "Stainless Steel" without a published grade (304 vs. 316). If your application has a specific grade requirement — chloride exposure, a spec callout, potable certification — tell us and we'll confirm the grade with the manufacturer before you order rather than assume.

Brass camlocks aren't currently a listed line at Apex. If your spec calls for brass specifically — matching an existing brass system, or a service where brass is the standard — we can source it through our supplier network. That's a real answer, not a dead end: tell us the size, type letter, and quantity and we'll get you a price the same business day rather than list something we can't actually back with stock.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use aluminum camlocks for sodium hypochlorite service?
No. Sodium hypochlorite attacks aluminum and causes pitting and seizure within months on transfer duty. Use polypropylene bodies with Viton gaskets for hypochlorite and similar oxidizer service.
Is stainless always the safest choice?
It's the broadest chemical-resistance option among what we stock, but it costs the most, weighs the most, and currently has the narrowest size/type coverage of the three materials. For plain water or general transfer, aluminum or polypropylene is usually the more practical call.
Do you sell brass camlock fittings?
Not as a stocked line currently. We can source brass by quote if your application specifically requires it — ask us for size, type, and quantity.
What grade of stainless are your camlock fittings?
