Camlock Gaskets: Buna-N vs Viton
The lever arms on a camlock coupler don't seal anything — they apply clamping force. The actual seal is a rubber gasket seated inside the coupler, and it's the part almost nobody stocks a spare of until a joint starts weeping mid-transfer and the truck's on the clock. A camlock fitting fails from a bad gasket long before the aluminum, polypropylene, or stainless body wears out, which makes the gasket the highest-consequence, lowest-cost part in the whole assembly. What Buna-N (NBR) Gaskets Are
Buna-N — nitrile rubber — is the standard gasket material across our camlock line because it's inexpensive and handles general-purpose transfer well: plain water, mild solutions, petroleum oils and fuels. It's the right default for the majority of mechanical-duty transfer applications, which is why it's the non-suffixed, standard option on every size we stock.
Buna-N's weak point is the same one that shows up across every elastomer product family on this site: it isn't built to resist oxidizing chemicals, and it degrades under ozone and UV exposure over time. That single limitation is behind most wrong-gasket failures in cam-and-groove service.
What Viton (FKM) Gaskets Are
Viton is a fluoroelastomer engineered for chemical and heat resistance that general-purpose rubber can't match. It resists oxidation and a broad range of aggressive chemicals well, and it costs more than Buna-N — you pay for resistance you actually need, not resistance you don't. It's the upgrade option, not the universal replacement: Viton has its own limits against hot water and steam, and some polar solvents attack it, so "always order Viton" isn't the right instinct either. The right call depends on what's actually in the line.

Why Hypochlorite and Oxidizer Service Demand Viton
This is the one chemistry boundary on this page that's absolute, and it holds regardless of what the coupling body is made of. Sodium hypochlorite — standard liquid bleach, the chemical behind most disinfection and hypo-feed transfer — is an oxidizer, and Buna-N is not formulated to resist it. Run hypo through a standard Buna-N camlock gasket and it hardens, cracks, or loses its sealing ability over time, and the joint starts weeping exactly when you need it not to. How Often to Replace
A camlock gasket is a consumable, not a lifetime part — every disconnect-and-reconnect cycle compresses and releases it, and UV and ozone exposure work on it whether the joint is in use or sitting connected outdoors. There's no single published replacement interval that applies across every service and cycle count, so treat any specific number as a guideline, not a spec: many operators inspect the gasket at every disconnect and replace it at the first sign of flat-spotting, cracking, or a surface that's gone hard instead of staying supple. Keeping a few spares on hand at your working size costs a few dollars and avoids a delayed load-out over a part that would've taken thirty seconds to swap.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the gasket matter more than the coupling body material?
They're both wetted parts and both have to be right — a Viton gasket in an aluminum body doesn't fix aluminum's oxidizer problem, and a Buna-N gasket in a polypropylene body doesn't fix the gasket's oxidizer problem. Check both before ordering for anything beyond plain water.
Can I run sodium hypochlorite through a standard Buna-N camlock gasket?
Not for long. NBR isn't formulated to resist oxidizing chemicals like hypochlorite, and the gasket will harden, crack, or stop sealing over time. Viton is the standard recommendation for this service.
How do I know if my camlock gasket needs replacing?
Check for flat-spotting where the gasket has been compressed, visible cracking, or a surface that feels hard rather than supple. Any of those on inspection is worth replacing before the next transfer rather than after it fails.
