Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a wafer and a lug butterfly valve?
A wafer butterfly valve sandwiches between two pipe flanges and is held in place by the flange bolts passing through both flanges — it cannot be used as a line end valve because removing either flange drops the valve out of the line. A lug-style butterfly valve has threaded inserts in the body so each flange side can be bolted independently, allowing one side of the pipeline to be removed while the valve remains in place as a line-end shutoff. For most inline service, wafer style is the economical standard; lug style is required where dead-end service or sectional pipeline removal is needed. When should I choose a gear-operated valve versus a lever-operated valve?
Lever-operated butterfly valves provide fast quarter-turn open/close and are the right choice for 2" through 8" valves in applications where quick manual actuation is needed and operating torque is manageable. Gear-operated (gearbox) valves use a handwheel with a worm gear to multiply torque, making them necessary for larger sizes (typically 8" and above) or where high-pressure differential across the disc would make a lever impractical to operate. Gear operators also allow for more controlled, gradual opening to reduce water hammer in large-diameter systems.
How do I choose between EPDM and Buna-N seat material?
EPDM (ethylene propylene) seats are the standard for water service, HVAC hydronic systems, dilute acids, bases, and steam applications — they resist ozone and UV degradation and are safe for potable water contact. Buna-N (nitrile rubber) seats perform better with petroleum products, oils, fuels, and air service where EPDM would swell and fail. Neither material is compatible with concentrated solvents or strong oxidizing chemicals; those applications require Viton seats.
