How to choose a ball valve

  1. Start with the service: the fluid, its temperature and the working pressure. Media suitability depends on the specific fluid, concentration, temperature, pressure and seat and seal materials. Manufacturer documentation may be requested before specifying.
  2. Match the rating to your working pressure. Read the rating exactly as the manufacturer prints it: some series carry a psi WOG rating, some a plain psi rating, and steel block valves a working pressure per part number.
  3. Choose the port. A full-port valve has a full-bore opening. The manufacturer notes that the standard port on the 316 one-piece valve restricts flow.
  4. Choose the flow path. Two-way valves are for on/off shutoff. Three-way steel block ball valves come with NPT or SAE connection options; review the documented configuration for the specific part number.
  5. Match the end connection: female NPT, male × female NPT, SAE straight (UNF) thread, socket or hose barb, as listed for each part number.
  6. For gas or drinking-water service, request the manufacturer's documentation for the specific valve before specifying. Certification and listing marks are model-specific manufacturer designations. Standard 600 WOG brass valves (not lead-free) are not intended for drinking-water contact; lead-free brass ball valves are listed in their own collection.

Understanding WOG and PSI

WOG stands for water, oil and gas. A WOG rating is the manufacturer's working pressure for water, oil and gas service; some series add qualifiers such as non-shock, and each rating is listed as printed. Pressure capability falls at higher temperature, so request the manufacturer's documentation for hot service. Where the catalog prints a plain psi rating, as on the 316 one-piece and 2000 psi two-piece series, the rating is listed as printed. A WOG rating is not a certification for any specific application.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between full-port and standard-port ball valves?

A full-port valve has a full-bore opening; a standard-port valve has a smaller opening, and the manufacturer notes that the standard port on the 316 one-piece valve restricts flow. Full-port bodies include the full-port 600 WOG and male × female brass series and the two-piece 316 stainless series. The 316 one-piece and carbon steel one-piece valves are standard port. Port style for other families is listed on each product or available on request.

What is the difference between a WOG rating and a plain PSI rating?

A WOG rating is the manufacturer's working pressure for water, oil and gas service, sometimes with qualifiers such as non-shock. Some series are printed with a plain psi rating instead. Each rating on this site is listed as the manufacturer prints it.

Which ball valves on this page carry a 2000 psi rating?

Examples with a printed 2000 psi rating include the 316 stainless two-piece 2000 psi series, 1/4 to 2 in., and the carbon steel one-piece valves from 1/4 to 1 in., which are rated 2000 psi WOG; carbon steel one-piece valves from 1-1/4 to 2 in. are rated 1500 psi WOG. Steel block valves list a working pressure per part number where the manufacturer publishes one.

Are these valves rated for gas or drinking-water service?

Not every valve is. Certification and listing marks vary by model and are manufacturer designations; Apex Flow Solutions has not independently verified listing certificates or file numbers. Standard 600 WOG brass valves (not lead-free) are not intended for drinking-water contact. Request the manufacturer's documentation before specifying a valve for gas, drinking-water or code-governed service.

Do you carry three-way ball valves?

Yes. Three-way steel block ball valves are available with NPT or SAE connection options. Review the documented configuration and working pressure for the specific part number.

How is availability shown?

Valves ship from our manufacturer partner, and the current lead-time status is shown on each product page. No minimum order.

How do I request documentation or selection help?

Send the part number, a photo, or the size, end connection, media, working pressure and temperature. The Apex Flow Solutions technical desk can help narrow the available options and documentation.
