Strainer Blowdown and Maintenance

A strainer that's never cleaned isn't protecting anything — it's just a clog waiting to happen. Every strainer, Y-pattern or basket, loads up with whatever the line is carrying, and the only question is how you find out: on your schedule, through a planned blowdown, or on the process's schedule, when a starved pump or a flow alarm tells you first. This guide covers how to set up a blowdown valve correctly, how to think about inspection intervals without over-prescribing a one-size-fits-all number, and the symptoms that tell you a screen is plugged before it costs you real downtime.

Blowdown Valve Setup

A blowdown (or flush) connection is a secondary port, usually at the bottom of the screen pocket on a Y-strainer or on the cover of a basket strainer, fitted with its own small valve piped to a drain or safe discharge point. Its purpose is simple: let accumulated debris flush out of the strainer body without opening the main cover or pulling the screen.

  • Valve selection. A quarter-turn ball valve is the common choice for a blowdown connection — quick to open fully for a hard flush, quick to confirm closed by the handle position. Size it to the blowdown port, not the main line; most blowdown connections are a fraction of the strainer's nominal size, and an undersized blowdown valve just makes flushing take longer without adding any benefit.
  • Piping to drain. Route the blowdown discharge to a drain, sump, or other safe point — not onto a walkway or into a space that floods equipment. On pressurized lines, confirm the blowdown valve and downstream piping are rated for full line pressure, since you're opening a direct path to atmosphere at system pressure during a flush.
  • Isolation for full service. A blowdown valve clears loose debris but doesn't replace pulling the screen for a real cleaning or inspection. Plan isolation valves on both sides of every strainer in continuous service so the screen can come out without draining or shutting down the whole line.

Screen Inspection Intervals — Practice Guidance, Not a Prescription

There's no single correct cleaning interval that applies across every installation — how fast a screen loads depends entirely on how dirty the line actually is, and that varies by source water, season, and system age. What follows is general practice guidance to build a schedule around, not a fixed rule:

  • New installations and commissioning. A freshly piped system sheds an outsized amount of scale, weld slag, thread sealant, and construction debris in its first hours and days of operation. Plan to inspect a new strainer's screen after the first few hours of run time and again within the first day — the initial loading is almost always heavier than steady-state service will be.
  • Steady-state service. Once a system settles in, base the interval on trend, not the calendar. Watch pressure drop across the strainer (see below); a rising differential over time tells you the screen is loading, and you can start to calibrate a realistic interval from how long that takes to become significant.
  • Seasonal and source changes. Raw water, irrigation intake, or any source subject to runoff, algae bloom, or seasonal sediment shifts deserves a tighter inspection interval during the season when solids load is highest — treat the interval as adaptive to conditions, not fixed year-round.

The goal of any interval, however it's set, is to clean or blow down the strainer comfortably before pressure drop climbs enough to matter to the process — not to wait for a flow complaint to set the schedule.

Reading Pressure Drop

Pressure drop is the most reliable signal a strainer gives you about its own condition. A clean screen, sized correctly for the line's flow rate, shows a modest and fairly stable pressure drop. As debris accumulates, that drop climbs — first gradually, then faster as the remaining open area shrinks. If differential pressure gauges are installed across the strainer (worth adding on any critical or hard-to-access installation), a rising trend is your cleanest early warning, well before flow is affected enough to notice downstream.

Without gauges, the practical substitute is watching for the downstream symptoms below and correlating them to how long it's been since the last cleaning.

Plugged-Screen Symptoms

A loading screen announces itself through the system around it, not through the strainer itself:

  • Reduced flow or pressure downstream — a fixture, spray nozzle, or process that's suddenly underperforming with no other change in the system is a common first sign.
  • Pump straining or increased amperage — a pump working harder to move the same flow through a restricted screen shows up as higher current draw, and on a suction-side strainer, can edge toward cavitation.
  • Cavitation noise at pump suction — a knocking or rattling sound at the pump inlet, especially under a suction strainer, often means the restriction has pulled local pressure down near vapor pressure.
  • Meter reading drift — a flow meter downstream of a loading strainer reads increasingly inaccurately as the restriction changes the flow profile feeding it.
  • Rising differential pressure gauge reading, where gauges are installed — the most direct and least ambiguous signal.

Any one of these on its own can have other causes; two or more together, especially without another obvious explanation, point squarely at a strainer that's overdue for a look.

Cleaning Practice

A blowdown flush clears loose debris without opening the body, and it's the right first move on a routine schedule. For a full cleaning: isolate the strainer with the upstream and downstream valves, relieve pressure, open the cap or cover, and pull the screen. Inspect it for damage — a torn or deformed screen isn't just less effective, it can let debris straight through to whatever it's supposed to protect. Clean the screen thoroughly (compressed air or a wash, depending on what's trapped in it) before reinstalling, and confirm the cap or cover gasket seats properly on reassembly; a poorly reseated cover is a leak point that shows up the first time the line comes back up to pressure.

Clean, Repair, or Replace?

  • Screen is loaded with debris but otherwise intact → clean it. A blowdown flush or a full pull-and-clean restores flow without touching the body.
  • Cover gasket is leaking after reassembly → repair. Reseat the gasket correctly; replace the gasket itself if it's compressed or damaged.
  • Screen is torn, deformed, or corroded through → replace the screen. A damaged screen lets debris straight through to whatever it's protecting, even while it still looks mostly intact.
  • Strainer body itself is cracked, corroded, or the blowdown/isolation valves won't hold → replace the strainer. A cleaning schedule can't fix a compromised body.

Common Mistakes

  • Undersized blowdown valve or piping that turns a two-minute flush into a ten-minute one, which is usually the reason a busy shift skips it.
  • No isolation valves around a strainer in continuous service, which turns every cleaning into a full system shutdown instead of a quick, planned task.

When Replacement Is the Better Option

  • The screen is torn, deformed, or corroded through — cleaning doesn't restore a screen that no longer holds its mesh integrity.
  • The strainer body is cracked or corroded — no cleaning schedule fixes a compromised body, and a body failure under pressure is a different order of problem than a plugged screen.
  • The mesh size no longer matches the application after a process or source-water change — reinstalling the old mesh just recreates the same loading pattern.
  • The blowdown or isolation valves around the strainer no longer hold — at that point, routine cleaning turns into a full shutdown every time, which defeats the purpose of having them.
