Gate Valve Won't Open / Stuck
Problem: the handwheel won't turn at all, or it turns without the stem actually traveling — the valve is frozen shut.
Likely causes:
- Mineral scale and corrosion have bonded the wedge to the seats — the most common cause on a valve sat closed for years
- The stem has galled inside the packing gland

Gate Valve Leaking Around the Stem
Problem: water or process fluid weeping or dripping out where the stem exits the bonnet, while the valve otherwise seals fine downstream.
Likely cause: worn or loose packing — almost always, if the leak location is genuinely at the stem and not somewhere else on the body.
How to diagnose it: confirm it's the stem, not the seat — dry outside the bonnet but still passing flow downstream points to the seat, not the packing, and tightening the gland won't help.

Gate Valve Hard to Turn

Gate Valve Leaking Through (Won't Seal)
Problem: the valve is confirmed fully closed — correct turn count, seated firmly — but flow still passes through it.
Likely causes:
- Debris embedded between the wedge and seat
- Worn or eroded sealing surfaces on the wedge or seat
- Damage from prior throttling use — gate valves aren't built for partial-open service, and it erodes the wedge edge

Repair vs. Replace: The General Rule
- Small threaded bronze or brass valve, roughly 2 in. and under → replace. The labor to disassemble, source parts, and rebuild routinely costs more than a new one.
- Larger ductile iron AWWA C509/C515 main valve, body sound, just weeping at the stem → repair. A repack is economical since the body isn't disturbed.

Keeping a Gate Valve From Becoming a Problem
