Insert fittings — also called barbed insert fittings, poly pipe inserts, or polyethylene pipe inserts — are barbed fittings that insert directly into the cut end of polyethylene (PE), polybutylene, or poly pipe, secured by a stainless steel or nylon clamp ring that compresses the pipe wall over the barb. Insert fittings are the dominant joining method for drip irrigation, agricultural poly pipe, landscape water distribution, and rural water supply systems where flexible PE pipe is the standard material.

Sizing Insert Fittings
Insert fittings are sized by the nominal pipe size of the poly pipe they accept — not by the barb OD. The barb OD is intentionally slightly larger than the pipe ID to create an interference fit when clamped. Always verify that the fitting nominal size matches your poly pipe's nominal size. Confirm the pipe ID with a caliper if you are unsure — poly pipe standards vary by manufacturer and flow rating.
Installation
Push the barbed fitting fully into the pipe end (heated pipe is easier to seat on cold days). Apply a stainless insert clamp or cinch clamp over the pipe at the barb, and crimp or tighten to specification. Do not use worm drive hose clamps on poly pipe — they apply point load that splits the pipe wall.
