Wafer vs Swing Check Valve
On larger flanged lines you will usually choose between a wafer (double-door) check and a flanged swing check. Both stop backflow on big water, HVAC, and fire lines, but they install and behave differently. The short answer: wafer checks are far more compact and lighter and resist slamming, while flanged swing checks are simple and time-proven but heavier and longer.
How they differ
A wafer check is a thin body that sandwiches between two pipe flanges, with two spring-loaded half-discs that fold together against reverse flow. A swing check is a full-bodied flanged valve with a single hinged disc that swings on the flow.

When wafer wins
Choose wafer when space and weight matter, when you want non-slam closing to protect against water hammer, or when you need a UL/FM-listed valve for fire protection. In larger diameters the wafer is dramatically shorter and lighter.
When swing wins
Choose a flanged swing check for the lowest pressure drop on steady horizontal flow, for simplicity, and where a lever-and-weight or spring option is needed to tune closing on pump systems. Swing checks are the traditional choice on municipal water where the ductile-iron AWWA design is specified.
