Selecting the right valve starts with understanding your application. The first question is always: what is the valve's primary function? If you need to completely stop and start flow, a ball valve or gate valve is typically your best option. If you need to regulate or throttle flow with precision, a needle valve gives you the fine control that ball and gate valves cannot. If you need to prevent backflow and protect upstream equipment, a check valve is the only appropriate choice. Matching the valve type to the job eliminates most selection errors before you ever look at a spec sheet.
Material selection is the next critical decision. Brass valves are the workhorse of general plumbing and industrial applications — they handle water, air, oil, and non-aggressive chemicals at moderate temperatures. Stainless steel valves are required when you're dealing with corrosive chemicals, high temperatures, or sanitary applications in food and pharmaceutical processing. PVC valves make sense for chemical feed systems, water treatment, and irrigation where metal corrosion is a concern and operating pressures are moderate. For any potable water application, lead-free brass or bronze valves certified to NSF/ANSI 61 and 372 are not optional — they are required by code.
Pressure and temperature ratings must match your system's operating conditions with an appropriate safety margin. Every valve has a rated working pressure at a specific temperature, and that rating decreases as temperature increases. A valve rated at 600 PSI WOG (water, oil, gas) at ambient temperature may only be rated for 150 PSI at elevated steam temperatures. Always verify that the valve's rating exceeds your maximum operating pressure at your maximum operating temperature. End connection type — NPT threaded, socket weld, flanged, or true union — must also match your existing piping system.
